Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41412) is a nationally accredited qualification and is run in partnership with ACTU Organising Centre.
This course runs for 6 days in two 3 day parts. Part 2 will be held on 23-25 May 2016
The cost of the course is payable on enrolment by the participant or their employer.
Training is nationally accredited and therefore GST is not payable on fees. Cancellation of an enrolment must be received in writing.

CORE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with providing advice about the legislative duties, rights and obligations of individuals and parties prescribed in WHS laws Elements: 1. Assist with determining the legal framework for WHS in the workplace 2. Assist with providing advice on WHA compliance 3. Assist with WHS compliance measures CORE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to the implementation and maintenance of WHS consultation and participation processes in the workplace as part of a systematic approach to managing WHS Elements: 1 Identify individuals and parties involved in WHS consultation and participation processes 2 Contribute to WHS consultation and participation processes 3 Contribute to processes for communicating and sharing WHS information and data 4 Contribute to identifying and meeting training requirements for effective WHS consultation and participation 5 Contribute to improving WHS consultation and participation processes CORE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to identifying work health and safety hazards; assessing WHS risks; and developing, implementing and evaluating risk controls appropriate to won job role and work area Elements: 1. Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of risk control CORE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to the implementation and maintenance of a work health and safety management system (WHSMS) as it applies to own work area and job role Elements: 1 Contribute to developing and promoting WHS policy 2 Contribute to WHSMS planning 3 Contribute to implementing the WHSMS plan 4 Contribute to evaluating WHS performance 5 Contribute to reviewing and improving the WHSMS CORE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with actions and activities performed in response to incidents Elements: 1 Assist with identifying legislative and other requirements 2 Assist with implementing initial incident response procedures 3 Assist with collecting WHS information data relevant to an investigation 4 Assist incident investigations 5 Assist in implementing recommended measures and actions arising from investigations ELECTIVE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with the management of worker’s compensation claims, rehabilitation and return-to-work programs Elements: 1 Assist with managing claims 2 Assist with planning for and implementing a successful rehabilitation or return-to-work program 3 Assist with monitoring and evaluating a rehabilitation or return-to-work program ELECTIVE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with monitoring a range of physical agents and conditions relevant to work health and safety. Elements: 1 Assist with selecting measuring devices 2 Assist with preparations to collect workplace information and data 3 Assist with collecting workplace information and data 4 Assist with documenting and evaluating results of monitoring ELECTIVE This unit covers the competency required to implement workplace emergency prevention procedures within a workplace or a defined group of workplaces. Elements: 1. Ensure workplace emergency prevention processes are implemented 2. Ensure appropriate hazard analysis is undertaken and results are implemented 3. Ensure workplace emergency protection systems, emergency control equipment and evacuation systems remain effective ELECTIVE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop, implement and evaluate a strategic approach to organising and recruiting union members. Note that different organising plans may be developed for different worksites, employers and/or groups of workers. Elements: 1. Develop organising plans 2. Implement organising plans 3. Evaluate organising plans ELECTIVE This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work with diversity and to promote equality within the union and the workplace. It deals with challenging discrimination on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age and employment status. Elements: 1. Promote involvement of diverse groups 2. Promote elimination of Discrimination 3. Access and review policies to promote equality and fair treatment
Delivery Mode and Duration: The Certificate IV in WHS is a guided 2 month program. Participants attend a 3 day face-to-face workshop at the beginning of the 4 months, and a second 3 day workshop at the end of the 2 months. They also read learner guides for 3 units between attending workshops 1 and 2. There are 6 weeks between each workshop training block to allow participants to relate their learning to their workplace and to practice and consolidate their knowledge and skill. Participant Induction: Participants receive a half hour induction on the first morning of the first workshop. The induction provides information about the course, and outlines everyone’s roles and responsibilities. You will have the opportunity to individually discuss any special needs you have with your Educator. Arrangements for support will be noted and kept in your individual participant file.
Workshop Attendance Requirements: Participants are required to attend every day of all courses as per the scheduled dates. In general, training commences at 9am and concludes at 5pm, with an hour lunch break. Punctual attendance at all sessions is expected.
What if you are unable to attend a Workshop? If you are unable to attend training due to illness, or other valid reason, contact your Educator asap in advance or on the morning of training. Alternative arrangements will be offered for assessments completed during the sessions you have missed. Behaviour During Workshops: All participants are responsible for helping to maintain both a positive and safe learning environment. You are expected to observe the Code of Conduct. Under our Code of Conduct, participants are expected to: • follow attendance requirements and observe punctuality for all training sessions; • show respect for each other, for the Educators and for all visitors; and • take care of training facilities
Participant Support: Educators will try to give you reasonable access to training and assessment. This includes providing support such as; • referral to language, literacy and numeracy assistance, where required; • referral to external welfare and guidance services, if appropriate; and/or • reasonable / allowable adjustments of assessments if you have special needs. Educators are available to participants outside course hours via telephone and/or email. If you experience difficulty with course work talk to your Educator for help. Outcomes and Pathways: On completion you will be awarded the Qualification (if achieving competency in all 10 units) or a Statement of Attainment (if achieving competency in 1 to 9 units) in Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41412). |
