New WHS Laws Bill Released
As many of you are aware the WA Government has introduced to Parliament the Work Health Safety Bill 2019. The safety at work of almost all working people in WA, over 1.3 million people, is governed by these laws.
The bill is a modernised Work Health and Safety Bill for Western Australia. The new Legislation will be based on the national model Work Health and Safety Act, and will improve consistency with the rest of Australia by providing one piece of legislation for workplace safety and health across all Western Australian industries.
The State Government's “single Act approach” means that the Occupational Health and Safety landscape can be streamlined and simplified in WA, with the Bill replacing three Acts: Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984, Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994; and the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Safety Levies Act 2011.
The development of the Bill involved extensive consultation with stakeholders including UnionsWA represented the interests of WA Workers on the Ministerial Advisory Panel into the reforms and will ensure that the safety and welfare of workers is considered paramount at all times.
