OSH for Committees

This course is designed for staff who are members of an OSH Committee. There are no pre-requisites for this training course, which is made up of a number of modules that is normally presented over a one day period.

The course is conducted in a training room however; participation by all committee members is encouraged during the course. The course is interactive in nature and also includes lectures and a Video presentation.

Aims:

To provide participants with the knowledge, skills and abilities to pursue and promote a safe working culture when working an OSH Committee. Reviewing all hazard and incident/accident reports forms part of this role as do reviewing and/or developing “in-house” Safety Standards. This is undertaken by utilising various tools including legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and/or any existing established in-house standards.

Objectives: 

On completion of training the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the make-up, functions and roles of a safety and health committee as established under the Act;
  • Demonstrate the key skills required of a committee member and to participate effectively in meetings;
  • Identify and describe the key elements of a committee;
  • Discuss how agendas are developed.
  • Demonstrate the key skills required by a Safety and Health Representative to effectively participate in committee meetings;
  • Demonstrate communication strategies for addressing safety and health issues; and
  • Understand the principles required to participate effectively in the running of a Safety Committee meeting with their involvement.

Manual Handling

This course is designed to assist staff to gain knowledge and skills in prevention of manual handling related incidents by the use of relevant OSH Act, Regulations and Code of Practice relating to Manual Handling Hazards. The course can be designed for particular occupations and/or organisations. A half day to one day duration depending on participants prior knowledge and training requirements.

Aims:

The course outlines the duties of employers/employees for identifying Manual Handling Hazards and the types of Manual Handling injuries; Functions of the spine, body posture and muscle work; Risk Management approach to Manual Handling Tasks and their controls; Task Mapping and Direct observation of tasks

Objectives: 

On completion of the training the participants will be able to:

  • Be aware of how a task analysis is preformed
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control and evaluation for manual handling tasks
  • Be aware of manual handling techniques for tasks performed by different service groups
  • Be aware of the appropriate use of various manual handling aids for tasks performed by various service groups

Manual Handling Office Ergonomics

In this short course participants will be able to provide or enhance their skills to effectively manage and reduce injuries associated with the office environment. A two to four hour duration depending on participants prior knowledge and training requirements.

Aims:

The course provides theory and practical aspects of OSH in the office environment and is aimed at OSH Officers, OSH Representatives and supervisors.

Objectives: 

  • Describe the legislation relevant to manual handling as applied to an office situation
  • Describe the safety and health effects relating to manual handling associated with clerical and keyboard tasks
  • Identify and assess the risk factors relating to manual handling and the development of injuries
  • Set up a workstation for clerical and keyboard tasks
  • Identify and prioritise, in consultation, appropriate control measures
  • Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of control measures

Control of Hazardous Substances (Chemical Safety)

This short course will provide participants with a knowledge of hazardous substances, including chemical hazards, and their control in the workplace.

Aims:

The aim is to provide the skills and technical knowledge in handling hazardous substances in the workplace and all staff including managers and supervisors should attend. A two hour duration course depending on participants training requirements.

Objectives: 

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legislation applicable to the use of Hazardous substances
  • Identify hazardous substances in the workplace and understand the range of hazards associated with them
  • Conduct risk assessments
  • Implement risk control strategies as required under state legislation
  • Know where to find information and resources on the safe use, handling , transportation, storage and disposal of chemicals they use
  • Understand the content of Materiel Safety Data Sheets

Personal Protective Equipment and Clothing (PPEC)

This short course is for participants to be able to use PPEC in an appropriate way.

Aims:

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and practical skills to select, use and maintain PPEC appropriately. A one to two hour duration course depending on participants training requirements.

Objectives: 

Participants should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of the hierarchy of control
  • Appreciate the renage of PPEC available, its functions and its limitations
  • Select PPEC which is appropriate for both user and the work task
  • correctly fit and safely use PPEC
  • Develop procedures to ensure that appropriate training and supervision are provided to all staff who are required to wear PPEC
  • Preform appropriate inspections and simple maintenance of PPEC and be able to recognise when replacement PPEC is required
